From Switzerland Tourism’s star-studded ad featuring Robert De Niro and Roger Federer to PregaNews’ Mother’s Day spot and McDonald’s Indonesia’s Ramadan commercial, here are the ads that Ritwika Gupta loved this week.
Brand: Switzerland Tourism
At a time when traveling seems like a distant dream for most of us in India, Switzerland’s tourism board released an ad film featuring Robert De Niro and Roger Federer, inviting people to their picturesque country. Most likely, the target audience here is the rest of Europe or America. Whether or not it’s a good time for a travel ad is another debate altogether but one can’t deny that this film is one of the few tourism ads that’s different, original and clever. Created by Swiss agency Wirz BBDO, the 90-second film called “No Drama” opens with Federer trying to convince De Niro trying to make a film in Switzerland. De Niro isn’t sure because he thinks Switzerland is “too perfect”. There’s no drama, no drama at all. (Mr De Niro, come to India, there’s A LOT of drama here!) After Federer makes one last pitch that involves skydiving and cows, De Niro gives his final word and says “Maybe call Hanks.” The ad ends with the text, “When you need vacation without drama. You Need Switzerland.” It’s such an intelligent narrative with two legends engaging in a fun banter and not taking themselves seriously. The production is fantastic and honestly, it did make me miss traveling. Now, wouldn’t it be interesting to see Roger Federer call Tom Hanks in the sequel? Waiting for it!

Brand: PregaNews
For Mother’s Day this year, Mankind Pharma’s pregnancy kit brand PregaNews launched the #CoolHaiMeriMaa campaign. It’s a lovely ad that looks to instil the message that a mother’s confidence in a child helps him or her become a better person personally and professionally. It depicts the story of a mum standing by and supporting her son at various junctures of his life. Conceptualised by SG Dream Media, the ad pays a tribute to all the moms in the world for the role they play in their kids’ lives, and express gratitude for teaching children the virtues of patience, resilience and courage. It puts a smile on your face.

Brand: McDonald’s Indonesia
McDonald’s Indonesia released a heartwarming ad for Ramadan this year, showing a family getting together to help recreate a moment for their child craving a McDonald’s meal. With people spending yet another Ramadan under lockdown restrictions, this ad depicts how the family’s creativity and collaboration enable them to produce a makeshift McDonald’s surprise at home to continue their Ramadan celebrations. It’s a sweet ad which also stands out among all other Ramadan commercials which are mostly focused on delivering a “good” message. This one does not emotionally manipulate you but it still tugs at the heartstrings. It shows that celebrations can be special and enjoyable when families come together. The message is fairly simple and relatable. This one’s a beautiful ad.
